IPOH - A total of 50 candidates from Methodist Girls School (MGS) did their school proud by obtaining distinction (A+, A, A-) in all subjects in the 2010 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, compared to 34 candidates in 2009.

MGS Principal Soot Mooy Ching, who announced the results here this morning said it was the school’s best SPM result in four years.

She said students’ performance in the examination was encouraging and showed improvement in terms of quality and quantity.

“I would like to congratulate and thank everyone especially the teachers, parents and students for their hardwork. We would not have done this well if not all because of these individuals,” said a beaming Soot.

Out of the 50 students who scored straight As, five obtained straight A+s putting them among the 32 top scorers in Perak.

They are Harmina A/P Vijayan, Tan Yun Ru, Lee Wei Chee, Jeanette Wong Qui Yi and Liew Chui Yee.

Top scorer Chui Yee, who aspires to be an engineer, had almost lost hope when the names of top scorers were being announced during the assembly earlier.

“I was waiting and waiting but my name wasn’t called out until the very end,” she said.

Head prefect Harmina is testimony that one can do well without attending tuition classes.

“I did not follow a timetable or study extra hours before the examination. What I did was to keep myself abreast with what was taught in school daily from the beginning of the school term,” said Harmina.

A total of 465,853 students sat for the SPM examination last year with 9239 candidates obtaining straight As and 403 scoring straight A+s.
